Born in Lisburn and now living in Annaghanoon near Waringstown, County Down, Lee has been drumming since she was given her first actual snare drum as a Christmas present when she was only two years old! She is now widely regarded as one of the top pipe band and rudimental drummers in the world.

Pipe Band Drummer –

Lee “walked out” with her first pipe band – Waringsford Pipe Band – on a parade just one day after her seventh birthday. A few years later after only a couple of months playing with Grade 2 Moneygore Pipe Band she was promoted to the position of the Band’s Leading Drummer while still only an 11 year old schoolgirl.

Because of her exceptional talent for drumming at such a young age Lee was “head hunted” by many Grade 1 bands. She joined The Pipes and Drums of the Royal Ulster Constabulary being the first female ever to be invited to play in their ranks. Playing with this prestige drum corps she gained numerous drumming accolades. These include winning in excess of 50 Drumming titles such as Ulster, All Ireland, Scottish, British, Cowal, European and World Drumming Championships as well as several ‘Champion of Champions’ titles.

Over the years she has been a drummer with some of the world’s leading Grade 1 pipe bands. In addition to her seven years with The Pipes and Drums of the R.U.C. she has drummed with Dysart and Dundonald, Glasgow Pipes and Drums and The Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, all from Scotland.

For the 2012 Pipe Band contest season Lee competed with Grade 2 Howard Memorial Pipe Band from Dungannon. As Leading Drummer she led the drum corps to success after success, winning six out of seven local competitions including the Ulster and the All Ireland Drumming Championships. At the end of the contest season the Howard Memorial drum corps was crowned local ‘Champion of Champions’. In addition, during the same 2012 year, under Lee’s guidance and tutorship, the drum corps finished in the top six at most of the ‘Major’ Pipe Band Championships.

Just recently Lee has been invited to join the drum corps of current World Champions – Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band.

Solo Drummer –

In a solo drumming career spanning twenty five years Lee can be proud of what is probably an unequalled record. To date she has won nineteen Major Solo Drumming Championship titles. Her wins include Ulster, All Ireland, and four World Solo Champion titles. She has also won solo competitions in Pleasanton, California and in Alden Biesen, Belgium. In addition to the Major titles Lee has annexed fifteen Minor Solo Drumming Championships and seven other solo competitions. She has also been runner-up in other Solo Championships on at least eighteen occasions. Lee is the first, and still the only, female to play at Senior level in solo drumming competitions – having won the right to do so at the tender age of just 18 years! Truly this is a record for her to be extremely proud of – especially in an activity that is almost exclusively male dominated.

Tutoring Qualifications –

During her childhood years at Waringstown Primary School and later at Banbridge Academy, Lee attended drumming classes at the Northern Ireland Piping and Drumming School. She achieved acclaimed successes in both Music Theory and Practical Drumming in each and all of the Music Grades – Grade 1 to Grade 8 – and became a fully qualified and Certificated Drumming Instructor and Teacher with the NIPDS.

Other Musical Achievements –

Having studied Performing Arts at Leeds College of Music, and, as well as being a drummer and classical percussionist, Lee has featured playing the Highland Bagpipe on CD recordings of Gospel and Traditional Irish music. Whilst studying in Leeds she was a regular percussionist and piper with the Yorkshire Volunteers Band – a military band that can trace its origin back to 1860.

For a few years Lee lived in Campbeltown, Scotland where she was a Drumming and Classical Percussion Instructor for Argyll and Bute Council. In addition to her instructor duties in several schools in the West Argyll area she conducted workshops and provided private tuition, passing on some of her considerable skills to young learner drummers. She also found time to play percussion with Campbeltown Brass Band at local, regional and National Championship level. At the same time she also played with Kirkintilloch Brass Band (Championship Section) at the National Brass Band finals in the Royal Albert Hall, London and at the British Open in Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Lee has toured, performed and recorded throughout Europe and the United States of America with artists such as Aoife ní Fhearraigh, Peter Corry, Noel Eccles Percussion Ensemble, Brian Kennedy, Van Morrison, Red Hot Chilli Pipers and numerous orchestras in the UK and Ireland.

Together with her cousin Mark Wilson – another solo and drum corps Championship winner – Lee performed in a percussion suite for 25 percussionists and the percussive foot taps of a troupe of Irish dancers for the half time entertainment at an Ireland v Scotland Six Nations Rugby match in 2004 with the performance televised live to over 80 million viewers throughout Europe.

In 2007 Lee, again with Mark, represented the drumming traditions of Northern Ireland at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC, performing on the National Mall and in The White House. They have also performed for HM Queen Elizabeth II in Royal Palaces and for the President of Ireland at Aras An Uachtarain.

For the past ten years Lee has also been a percussionist and arranger for ‘The Thursford Christmas Spectacular’ – a specialist musical show held annually in North Norfolk, England and which has the unique distinction of being billed as “the biggest Christmas show in the UK if not in Europe”!
